I’ve been unemployed for a few weeks now, and between work here and there and my unemployment checks, I’ve been left with a lot of free time on my hands. Laying around and watching the food network all day has led me to a new obsession, baking! So I set out, bought a couple of baking basics books, and set at it..

Now, my first journey into baking was with a Sour Cream Crumble Cake. The crumble cake was *delicious* but wasn’t quite what I wanted out of my baking experience, so I turned my eyes to the prize, Bread!

Everyone loves oven baked bread… the fresh smell that permeates to every corner of a household as the bread cooks throughout, the rich and pugnant smell of the yeast and flour as the bread rises and recives it’s gracious flavor… well anyway :)

For my first journey into breadmaking, I went with a Rosemary/Garlic/Onion bread, it seemed simple enough and it turned out great! I used fresh rosemary from my patio garden and loaded it up with some freshly diced garlic but left it chunky enough to make sure people notice, “HEY, THERE’S A HUGE PIECE OF GARLIC IN MY BREAD!”. Mission Accomplished!

On to the pictures :)

Wow! Delicious yeah? I’m really excited to be baking my own bread, I’m going to continue on this journey and learn how to make healthy bread now, instead of this starchy white sugar stuff. I’m hoping to make some delicious wheat, oat, nut, seed, whatever breads.. I might find some time to make some delicious croissants too. :)

My buddy Atom and I have been geeking out over our Android phones lately and I had an epiphany of where I’d like to see the technology go.Up until now, mobile platforms have been very bulky, disorganized, fragmented, and other than with the onset of the iPhone, generally a disappointing experience (save for some nokia/symbian smart phones that cost more than some desktop computers.)

Let’s get down to brass tax for a moment and think about how amazing the future could be with mobile devices. Qualcomm just announced their 1.5GHz dual core processors for mobile devices which in my opinion, are going to throw the mobile computing realm into hyperdrive. Reports say these processors will be cable of decoding 1080p video, and will perform on a level beyond that of current 1.3Ghz intel mobile processors. Wow!

What are we going to do with this exciting boost in speed? I say we do away with the entire concept of computing as we currently know it and introduce a new, person-centric computing experience. Allow me to explain…

Currently, my computing lifestyle is rather fragmented. I have my work laptop, my work desktop, my desktop computer, my mobile phone, etc. I’d like to see the merging of a few of those devices. Android has come a long way in the last couple of years, and I think it has great potential to go even further.

What I foresee is a future in which rather than carrying your laptop with you, you’ll carry a mobile dock which would consist of simply a larger LCD screen, keyboard, and input device (such as a mouse). It would probably be collapsible, perhaps on some of that new fangled e-ink digital paper displays. The performance of phones in the near future will equal that of our current realm of portable laptops, so rather than go into work and have a large desktop computer or a work laptop docked at your desk, you’ll simply plug your mobile device into a dock and it would enable a docked mode, your touch screen input would go away and you would then have control with a keyboard and mouse, and be able to access all of your data from the cloud (whether it be stored locally at your workplace or literally in ‘the cloud’). When finished you pop your phone out and go on with your day.

The beauty of combining these devices is of course the always on Internet connection over your cellular provider network. Some people may scoff and say “Well James, we already have this and it’s called the iPad”. Well to some extent this is true, but I don’t know why we need to carry an iPad and a cell phone. If we were to develop a new mobile standard for docking, I think we would see a huge leap in the field of mobile computing and the efficiency found there-in.

So, I guess we’ll see. Personally I hope a year from now I don’t have a laptop, I hope I can just throw my phone into a quick dock or a panel of some sort that I could bring along with me, or plug my phone in at work and work straight off of it. My desktop will continue to stay as 3d performance will most likely never reach the point that it would need to in a mobile device, but in the mean time I can hope to enjoy the freedom of a mobile computing platform for ALL of my needs.

This week my wife and I have traveled to Boston to spend some time with her family as well as enjoy some more celebrating of our marriage by being guests of honor at yet another reception with the Sicilian side of the family :)

The first part of this trip, however, is being spent out on Cape Cod enjoying some beautiful scenery and living quarters to celebrate my step-dad’s girlfriend’s daughter’s (whew!) wedding. The drive out here from where we are staying in Boston is about an hour and a half, but boy is it worth it. The scenery out here is just amazing, and all of the rich American culture out here is just amazing to soak in.

I plan on taking a few more pictures tomorrow and posting them up, but for now, check out the view :) It’s not too shabby if I do say so myself..

All in all, it’s shaping up to be a good 11 days of vacation. I can’t wait to see what else is in store for this trip. I’ve already chowed down on some clam chowder (I am forgoing my vegetarian ways for the delicious fish, just for this week..), so I am looking forward to grubbing on some lobster soon.

More tomorrow!

For the last year I’ve been back and forth on choosing what style of diet I enjoy the most. Low calorie, no red meat, low carb, low sugar, low glycemic.. Bouncing all over the place. I can say with some reasonable certainty that all of them made me feel about the same, while some were obviously healthier than the others and easier to maintain weight with. So I decided to try another one that seems to be a little more scientifically sound on the nutrition point of view, but also quite a bit more challenging than other dieting ventures I’ve attempted. So.. time to figure out how to get that last 10-15 lbs off, once again!

After having a nice long chat with my fianceé, we decided it would be nice (and beneficial) for us to try eating as vegetarians for a month and see how we like it. She has always had a passion for not eating the cute little animals (that are quite delicious), but has failed to keep chicken and turkey from the diet since it takes a large amount of time, energy, and effort to maintain a healthy vegetarian diet.

I have done a bit of research on being vegetarian and have found that it will probably be one of the better months of eating in my life. I picked up The Idiot’s Guide to Eating Vegetarian and it has an immense amount of information that really surprised me. I highly recommend everyone pick it up to at least get some insight on vegetarian lifestyle as well as nutrition. I can easily say I have a lot more sympathy and respect for those who have lived their whole lives as a vegetarian. :)

At the time of writing this, it has been about a week and a half since I started eating vegetarian and if I can keep it this interesting forever, I think I just might stay. There’s been so much variety in the flavors, consistencies, colors, and cravings in the last week that I would be hard pressed to have something bad to say about it. Well, other than my undying taste for bacon. Mmmm.

I will update with how my vegetarian journey goes as new interesting things happen :)

P.S. I launched a new nutritional energy drink this week, please check it out if you have a chance, I hope to use it supplement by vitamin B12 deficiency that will ultimately come from the vegetarian diet. It’s called Bios Life Smart Energy and you can check it out, here
